Lab-grown laser alexandrite is synthetic chromium-doped chrysoberyl (Cr:BeAl₂O₄) produced for solid-state laser gain media rather than for jewelry. The material is grown for optical purity and predictable doping levels, resulting in extremely clean crystals with strong and repeatable optical performance. This material displays intense red fluorescence under broad-spectrum illumination, not just UV, due to the chromium activator ions. This fluorescence strongly biases how cameras record the stone, causing digital images and video to either oversaturate the red response or suppress other wavelengths to compensate, which leads to inaccurate color rendering. Please review the many gems we have cut from this material before ordering to caliber your expectations. Even those photos, while we try our best, are not exactly accurate of what this material looks like in hand.
