GAGG is commonly used in PET scanners, where afterglow—or glow-in-the-dark properties—is actually an undesirable trait. As a result, most GAGG crystals are engineered not to exhibit this effect. However, every so often, a rare defective crystal is produced that defies this standard.
We’ve been searching for years to find a specimen with this unique characteristic, and this particular crystal stands out—glowing as brightly as the top 1% of any GAGG material we’ve ever encountered. It features a remarkable afterglow that lasts 10–15 minutes and, astonishingly, it’s also magnetic.
