Nd:YAG is the modern evolution of the ruby lasers that defined the early laser era of the 1960s. Ruby was the very first laser material, but by 1964 Nd:YAG had emerged with far better efficiency, stability, and power handling — and it quickly became the dominant solid-state laser medium used in industry, medicine, and research.
When this material is repurposed and cut into a gemstone, it shows an unexpectedly beautiful optical properties. Under LED light it appears almost pure white, but as illumination intensifies the crystal shifts into a soft, elegant lavender tone.
